Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in the short-term to reduce pain, inflammation and fever. Many people also buy Aspirin for long-term use in prevention of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, and certain types of cancer.

Though the drug is best known by the name Aspirin, and usually referred to as such, in some areas the term Aspirin is trademarked by Bayer. In these places the generic form of the product is called acetylsalicylic acid, often abbreviated as ASA.

The medication is thought to work by inhibiting production of the enzyme cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2). COX-2 is converted to prostaglandins when tissue is damaged (and sometimes for unknown reasons). Prostaglandins in turn send pain signals to the brain and promote swelling or inflammation in the injured area. Prostaglandins also promote blood clotting. Aspirin is believed to reduce fever by effecting the hypothalamus in the brain, though this process is poorly understood.

The pain- and fever-reducing properties of Aspirin were known at least as far back as ancient Greece, though it wasn't until the 1800s that the active ingredients were isolated and formulated to provide relief without severe side effects. Since then Aspirin has become one of the most widely-used medications in existence, commonly available in every corner of the world---an estimated 80 billion Aspirin tablets are consumed each year.

In most parts of the world patients can choose from a wide range of brand-name Aspirin products, and also have the option to buy Aspirin as a generic. Products containing Aspirin combined with other ingredients, such as caffeine or codeine, are also very common. In many places patients need a prescription to buy Aspirin in relatively high-dose formulations, or in combination with opioids like codeine, but lower-dose versions are usually available over-the-counter.

Buy Aspirin to Manage Pain & Fever

Aspirin is effective in treating mild to moderate pain and fever. For moderate to severe pain, combination products will likely be far more beneficial.

There are quite a few Aspirin products available in varying strengths and combinations designed to target certain types of pain. Tablets are the most common type of administration, but it can also be found in chewable tablets, syrups and effervescent tablets. As a general rule, liquid and chewable versions begin working quicker than tablets, but effects do not last as long.

In its simplest form, Aspirin for pain or fever relief typically comes in strengths of 300 to 325 mg per dose. In otherwise healthy patients of 12 years old and up:

  • Take 1 to 2 tablets every 4 hours as needed, or 3 tablets every 6 hours as needed.
  • Do not exceed 4000 mg of Aspirin in 24 hours.
  • Take with a full glass of water.
  • Avoid laying down for 10 minutes after administration if possible, to prevent stomach-related side effects.

Other formulations may include higher doses of Aspirin, or similar doses with extra ingredients included. Caffeine and codeine are common additives as they both enhance the painkilling effects. Some formulations include drugs to promote sleep, diminish cold or flu symptoms, or otherwise address multiple problems.

Be sure to read instructions for each product to ensure proper use, and use caution when taking other medications---Aspirin is found in a wide range of products, and without care it is easy to take too much.

Buy Aspirin for Long-Term Health

Small daily doses of Aspirin are associated with reduced risk of heart attack, stroke, formation of blood clots, and developing certain kinds of cancer. Small doses, often called "baby Aspirin," (a reference to small dosage, not suitability for infants) usually consist of 75 to 81 mg and are taken once per day.

Long-term Aspirin is often prescribed to patients who have just suffered a heart attack or stroke, but increasingly patients are using it as a preventive measure. In these cases treatment often starts between the ages of 45 and 50 even without any particular symptoms indicating it may be needed.

Though small doses sound harmless, long term use can produce severe side effects, particularly if there are other medical conditions present or other medications are being taken. It is advisable to speak with a doctor before initiating long-term Aspirin treatment.
